On Halloween 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published 'Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System' to the cryptography mailing list. The paper solved the double-spending problem without a trusted third party using proof-of-work and a timestamp server. It cited Adam Back's Hashcash and built on decades of cypherpunk research.
